They lived south of the Clinch River on land willed to himi by his father (the present site of Cleveland). Martha was a member of the Reeds Valley Baptist Church and is buried in the Ezekiel Counts Cemetery at Cleveland. Her premonition of approaching death and expressions of devout faith during her last illness were recorded in a small booklet probably published by her son Elijah. Her descendants treasure those memoirs today. During the Civil War he served several months in the Confederate Quartermaster Dept. at Bristol. He served as a deacon for many years [for the Reeds Valley Baptist Church] and represented his church as a messenger to the Washington District Associaton. - Note*: He BIOGRAPHY: The year of 1648 was a troubled one for Flanders but a significant one for the de Coninck family. After years of fighting, French armies captured the southern part of Flanders including the Wytschaete Ypres region were the ancestors lived and worked. Subsequently, by the Treaty of 1648, the area became part of France leaving many of the Protestant families in a dilema. They could stay and face certain persecution from new Catholic authorities bent on revenge and exploitation, or they could flee the region and attempt to start life anew somewhere else without the security of home or business ties. The decision of the de Coninck family was to leave. Their new home would be in the southern part of Netherlands. It had an advantage of lying only about 40 miles north of the north of Ypres and being under Protestant control. ALong with the possible fact that some relatives of the De Puydt family allready lived here. Pieter and his family first settled in Sint Anna ter Muiden in the southwestern portion of the Zeeland Province in Netherlands. Pieter and his wife became members of the Reformed Dutch Church. They then moved to Groed in Zeeland Province. Church records in Groed indecate that Pieter died in Groed some time after joining the church there in 24 June 1649.
