The babycertainly bore the christi an names of the Duke, Frederick Augustus, butthe Duke only became C-in-C of the British arm y several years after theboy was born. At the time of the child's birth the Duke was G.O.C.B ritish forces in Flanders, it is not impossible though that he alsocommanded the forces in th e Channel Islands. The Duke did raise the thefirst Rifle Regiment in the British army.
