Family legend tells that Robert was pressganged during the Napoleonic War, was at sea for 14 years, then escaped at Hull and was shot in the leg while escaping.
The facts of the matter differ somewhat: this War lasted 1793-1801, when a peace treaty was signed; the Navy was allowed to pressgang men only during wartime, and pressganging started in Feb. 1793; once the war was over (1801) pressganged men had to be released. Based on the births of his children Robert was at home 1785-1792and from 1801-1805; he was also listed as being at home in 1798, so he could have been away only from 1793 to 1797. There are records showing that pressgangsoperated on the Tyne and at North Shields, and that the men were held in tender ships until they were full enough to be sailed south to the naval bases. The records show that over 500 men were impressed along the River Tyne in the firstyear of the war.
