Grandma told us she had brought Mrs. Coffin to stay with her because 'she was dieing and had no place to go.' We went into the first bedroom off Grandma's kitchen, and there, tucked up so neatly in the center of the big wooden bedstead was thisserene little lady, who spoke with the grownups. She was in the very center of the bed, set up against pillows that had lacey edges. She wore a simple little headcovering, tied under her chin . I saw no signs of suffering, heard no complaining, saw nothing but kindness and respect. I was old enough to appreciate the name 'Mrs. Coffin'. I remember this introduction to dieing as a pleasant experience. The next time I visited Grandma's home I asked to see Mrs.Coffin and was told that she had died. My mother said that this was not the first time Grandma hadtaken some one in to care for 'at the end.' I remember their kitchen, with a small organ up against the wallof the sinkroom. I wasn't allowed in the sinkroom, where she prepared food, but I could play the organ in the kitchen. Some of the keys had missing ivories, but I worked the foot pedals and made a lot of noise and washappy. Beyond the kitchen table was a china closet. I remember the milk pitcher made in the form of a black and white cow....the milk poured out of its mouth! And there was a porcelain bell Grandma said was over a hundred years old ,brought from England. I have the bell now, in my breakfront. Its flowers have faded to a murky lavendar, close to being a 200 year old bell now....I hope one of my girls will save it. Grandpa Hodson's crystal set radio was to the right of the china cabinet. He let me listen in to the headphones, and we would marvel atthe distance the music spanned. Outside, I remember the wooden rain barrel where a frog lived,and the grape arbor used as a potting shed, and the flower garden in the back yard which Grandma kept. The only flower name I remember was bleedinghearts. I was told that Grandma did all the wallpapering and painting and maintenance of their three floor apartment house. It seemed such a big place then. I went back there this year...a Mr. Cabral has owned it for fifty years, he said. He remembered the Hodson name. My parents were living in the third floor apt. when I was born in 1924. Grandma was a great walker, would walk 'all the way to Lund's Corner' to visit friends. She always wore a hat as she went. She had bobbed hair when that was considered rather 'bold' in a young person. Her hair was silver white, so I guess that was o.k. I would come home from grammar school in Padanaram, trying not to think that maybe Grandma had come to visit at my house, because it was always a surprise when she came, and I wanted her to be there. Grandma was a Spiritualist and asked me when I was about 12 to goto a Spiritualist church 'just once, you would like it.' This year I finally got there, to a memorial service for a neighbor. ---Enid Kenworthy Cyphert.
