- Note*: He William Nesbit Andrews and Elizabeth Paterson were married in Barr by Girvan,(Ayreshire, S.W. Scotland) on October 17th, 1862. On 29th October, 1862, they emigrated to New Zealand aboard 'The Chariot of Fame'. A report of the voyage as it appeared in the 'Lyttleton Times', January, 1863, reads as follows... 'The White Star ship Chariot of fame arrived on Wednesday last. From leaving the Downs to the date of sighting the Snares the passage occupied eighty-one days, although owing to adverse winds and calms in the Channel and on the coast of New zealand, the passage from port to port occupied a fortnight more. The Chariot of Fame brings upwards of ....... passengers, of whom 430 are assisted immigrants. Thanks to the careful superintendance of Captain R. Kerr and Surgeon C. Medwin, M.D., the whole of the passengers have been landed in excellent health and spirits. The account of the passage is extracted from the log:- The Chariot of fame left the Downs on October 29, and experienced light winds and calm in the Bay of Biscay for five or six days: got moderate north-east trades and made the equator after a passage of twenty-six days. Was detained in sight of the coast of ........... for seven days. A steady south-east trade set in, succeeded by a heavy gale from the .........eastward, which continued forty-one hours, carrying away the three lower topsails and foresail. From this time there was favourable weather until she reached the meridian of the Cape on December 23. On the latter date during a steady breeze from the east, the ship running from ten to eleven knots, Henry Fisher, able-bodied seaman, fell from the fore topsail yardarm, struck the side and went overboard. When last seen he was bleeding from the face, a life buoy was immediately thrown over the side, ship rounded to. and port life boat manned, and lowered in charge of the first mate, who. after every exertion was used returned to the ship in three hours, having failed to pick him up. Having reached the Snares on January 17, experienced a succession of calms and head winds until arrival on the 28th. On the passage only one adult, a woman of delicate constitution and far advanced in pregnancydied, two children of the ages three and five years respectively, and five infants died from diarrhea, and two more died immediately after birth'. Records in the National Archives show the cost of the passage for Mr and Mrs Andrews wasTwenty-six pound. Of this amount Nine Pound was by way of Provincial Government assistance. Occupation of Mr Andrews was given as 'farm labourer'. Ref to Jean - see notes under Jean's entry William and Elizabeth lived in various places around the Fairlie area. Eventually they settled at Hazelburn (mid-way between Fairlie and Pleasant Point) where a substantial stone homestead was built. The property covered 39 acres 3 roods 16 perches with the main source of income appearing to be from an orchard. The property was purchased in 1874 and held in the Andrews name until John, who remained a batchelor, died in 1934. The homestead still stands and is inhabited and has been recently renovated. The property is called 'Glencarrie'. Both William and Elizabeth were buried at Pleasant Point, with the gravesite being shared with their daughter Agnes and son John.

Jean wrote to her father when in her late teens and suggested coming out, mentioning in the same letter her interest in Mr Nairn. The reply advised that she was welcome as a single girl, but if married to Mr Nairn she would not be welcome. She decided to remain in Scotland but died in childbirth when their son Gordon was born.
